Fostering Quality Education Through Partnerships

At Global Innovation Valley, we believe that education is the greatest equalizer in society. It is the most important tool in the toolbox of life. With it, people – especially young people – can build a future they dream of. That is, a future of equal opportunities for every person on the planet; a future free of hunger; a future free of all the existential threats to humanity.

It is because of this that one of our pillar programs is Education Scholarships. Here, we provide education scholarship opportunities to youths in Kakuma refugee camp and Kalobeyei refugee settlement. Our aim with the program is to impart knowledge and skills to these young people so they can become informed, discover new areas of learning interest, and expand their career opportunity zones.

As strong believers in the aphorism of “if you want to go far go alone; if you want to go further go together”, we partner with relevant organizations to facilitate bringing education opportunities to our target audiences. For instance, we are currently partnering with Techfugees Kenya, Google for Startups, and Coursera to bring Google Career Certificate courses to our scholars at no cost. The courses, which include Foundations of Digital Marketing and E-commerce, IT Support, Project Management, and Cybersecurity, among others – are meant to upskill participants for entry-level jobs in the digital economy.

Melkizedek, our digital manager, shared his accomplishment on social media.

Young refugees interested in joining our education scholarship program can apply by filling in this form. The program runs for 6 months. Although the course is self-paced, once per week, our scholars are required to show up at either of our physical facilities (in Kakuma or Kalobeyei) for knowledge exchange and deliberations on the challenges faced during the learning process.

We recently graduated 70 learners in our first cohort of the ICT and Digital Literacy program in Kakuma refugee camp and Kalobeyei refugee settlement. We are thankful to Internet Society Foundation for funding this program.

Our quest for providing inclusive and quality education doesn’t stop with the above-described strategic partnership. To bolster our ongoing ICT and Digital Literacy program (this program is funded by Internet Society Foundation and we recently graduated the first cohort), we are creating an in-house eLearning portal to enable anyone who hasn’t enrolled for our physical classes in Kakuma or Kalobeyei to access the learning the materials.
