In today’s digital world, young refugees are increasingly active on social media and online platforms, seeking opportunities to connect, learn, and grow. Unfortunately, this also makes them vulnerable to cyber threats such as social media scams, identity theft, and online fraud.
To address these challenges, Global Innovation Valley (GIV), in partnership with the Africa Cybersecurity and AI Foundation (ACAIF), organized a Cybersecurity Hygiene Campaign Workshop last week in Kakuma refugee camp. The event brought together over 100 young men and women from Kakuma and Kalobeyei refugee settlements, both refugees and young people from the host community , eager to gain critical knowledge to protect themselves in the digital space.
The workshop was honored by the presence of representatives from UNHCR and Red Cross Kenya, who inspired and motivated participants with their encouraging speeches. The workshop was sponsored by European Union and Expertise France
The campaign aimed to equip participants with practical skills to combat cybersecurity threats, including:
- Creating strong passwords and enabling two-factor authentication
- Recognizing scams, phishing emails, and fake social media accounts
- Safeguarding personal data and reporting suspicious online activities
Through interactive sessions and real-life examples, participants gained essential tools to stay safe online. Many young refugees shared personal stories of being victims of scams, emphasizing the workshop’s importance.
At GIV, we believe that empowering youth with digital skills can create a ripple effect of change. By equipping these young refugees with cybersecurity knowledge, we are not only protecting them but also enabling them to share this knowledge with their families and communities.
The impact of this workshop will continue to unfold as participants apply their newfound skills to stay safe online. GIV remains committed to creating opportunities for refugees and marginalized youth to thrive in a connected world, and we are confident that this campaign has set the foundation for a safer digital future.
The enthusiasm and active participation of the youth were truly inspiring. Their eagerness to learn demonstrated the need for continued digital literacy initiatives in refugee communities.
GIV is proud to play a role in empowering these young people with knowledge that will not only protect them but also benefit their communities.
We extend our gratitude to our partners, This is just the beginning. GIV will continue to host workshops, campaigns, and programs to empower youth with digital skills and prepare them to face the challenges of the digital age.
Together, we are building a resilient, informed, and empowered generation ready to navigate the internet safely and responsibly. Together, we are creating a safer digital future for all.
